Trivia: Music: Monkees

Hey! Hey! Their the Monkees. When the Monkees toured in the summer 1967, the opening act was little known Jimi Henricks with his group, "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" formed in London a year earlier with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell. I, myself, saw him in Mile High Stadium at The Denver Pop Festival. That was actually the last time the original group played together. He stopped touring with the Monkees because audiences weren't quite accepting of his music. Steve Stills unsuccessfully attempted to become one of the monkees. So on that note, name the four that did become "The Monkees".

Since yesterday was November 22, which was the anniversary of the tragic assassination of John F. Kennedy, here are  some unusual similarities between Lincoln and Kennedy. Their names each have seven letters and both were shot in the head on a Friday. Both were succeeded by a man named Johnson. Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy and Kennedy's secretary was named Lincoln. Both assassins have three names and 15 letters. Booth and Oswald were both killed before their trials.

Trivia: Movies: Academy Award

The most famous Oscar to children is Oscar the Grouch, the one that I like the best is Oscar Madison and the one everyone in Hollywood knows is just plain Oscar. No one really can say where the name came from, for the Academy Award, but the story that has been around the longest is that when Margaret Herrick, a librarian at the Academy saw the statue, she commented on how it looked like her Uncle Oscar.

Every year one person gets an Oscar for Best Actor and one gets him for Best Actress, except for one time when, in each category, it was a tie. For Best Actor in 1932 it was a tie between Fredrick March for "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" for which he played the Dr. and the Mr. and with Wallace Beery for "The Champ", for which he played the Champ. I would have to say that if it came down to only picking one winner, it should go to Wallace for a couple of reasons. One, the fact that he is "The Champ and the other reason is that it just wasn't really fair, after all, it was two against one. The trivia today is which two actresses tied, in 1968 for Best Actress that year? Movie Trivia: Arthur Penn "Bonnie and Clyde"

In October a great film maker had died, Arthur Penn. A day after his 88th birthday. His first movie in 1958 was "The Left Handed Gun" with Paul Newman followed by the successful "Miracle Worker" which was the story of Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller. Patty Duke won an oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Anne Bancroft for Best Actress and Arthur Penn for Best Director. That's a left, a right and a knock out punch. Let's go now to today's trivia which is in my new book, "The $5,000 Trivia Treasure Hunt Book", coming out soon. Arthur Penn director "Bonnie and Clyde in 1967. Which actor made his film debut in that movie as Eugene Grizzard, an undertaker?

Elvis Trivia

 My first memory of Elvis was the song "Hound Dog" which I heard because of my older brother. I don't really remember my reaction, but I sure did sing it a lot. The first record I bought would be "Return to Sender". Most people remember Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, but he was on the Milton Berle Show first and even the Steve Allen Show, when, for the first time Allen beat Sullivan in the ratings. So, even though, Sullivan had said Elvis was "unfit for family viewing", he booked him for three shows. Ironically, Sullivan was recuperating from a car accident for Elvis' first appearence on September 9, 1956. Which actor hosted that show? 
By the way, I was at the concert in Madison Square Garden, which was made into a Live album. Also want to say that there is a page of Elvis trivia in my new book, "The $5,000 Trivia Treasure Hunt Book" which is in the works now and will be available soon.

Trivia: Movies: King Kong vs. Godzilla

For many years there was a myth about the movie "King Kong vs. Godzilla", that even I believed and that was that in the American version King Kong won and that in the Japanese version Godzilla won. This myth started in the 60's in Spacemen magazine and continue through the 80's stated in a couple of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazines. Even the Trivial Pursuit's Genus III edition had it wrong. Since early Japanese movies were hard to come by the myth stood strong, but now that many older movies are available on home video the myth can be put to sleep. The movie was originally released in Japan August, 1962 and in the US in June, 1963. By the way, it has the highest box office attendance figures of all the Godzilla movies. Who knows which famous monster came out the victor?

TGIF

Today is Friday and many say "Thank God it's Friday", but truth be known it was named after a goddess. Actually two goddesses, but it is more of a debate than a shared honor.  One being Freya, the goddess whose sacred day is Friday while others say Friday is Frigga Day, named after Frigga, the wife of Odin who is a major god in Norse Mythology. So, again, trivia hits us just before the week end. On a final note, the Italian court said, as recent as December 2007, that a baby couldn't be named Friday. We can still say "TGIF", but just remember it's "Thank Goddess, it's Friday".

Welcome to my first unimportant blog

Trivia: matters or things that are very unimportant, inconsequential; pieces of information of little importance or value. This is why I love trivia so much. So where did that definition come from? It came from a dictionary and we all know whose dictionary. Since the answer to that question is Webster, we can all assume Webster is the piece of trivia in my very first blog. He is Noah Webster the author of popular readers and spelling books for schools. He published the first dictionary, so please don't mistake the name on the dictionary for that of Emmanuel Lewis or Sue-Anne Webster. By the way does anyone know who these two people are? Hint: He is not her son.
